What are All-on-4 Dental Implants?

All-on-4 is a full-arch implant technique in which four implants are placed at specific angles in the jaw to support a fixed bridge replacing a complete set of teeth. Two implants are placed vertically at the front of the arch, while two are angled towards the back to maximise contact with available bone.
This angled placement allows the implants to engage denser bone at the front of the jaw, often making it possible to proceed without the bone grafting that other full-arch techniques might require. At Galway Dentists, treatment is thoroughly planned using 3D imaging to achieve the best outcome for each patient.

Who is All-on-4 Suitable For?

  • Patients who are missing most or all of their teeth in one or both arches

  • Patients who have experienced bone loss but wish to avoid extensive grafting procedures
What to expect

All-on-4 Dental Implants Procedure

A comprehensive assessment is carried out, including digital scans, to plan implant placement and determine suitability. We will discuss your treatment options and expected outcomes in full.

Four implants are placed into the jaw under local anaesthetic at angles designed to maximise bone support.

In many cases, a temporary fixed bridge can be attached on the same day or shortly after surgery, so you leave with a full set of teeth while the implants heal.

The implants integrate with the bone over several months. Good oral hygiene during this phase is particularly important.

Once healing is complete, your custom-made permanent bridge is fitted and adjusted for comfort, function, and aesthetics.

  • I visited Michael Donnelly here at this practice. I found he put me right at ease, as I was worried about going to the Dentist. I had not attended a Dentist in over a year. He went through the procedure very thoroughly and any questions I had throughout his explanation, he was happy to answer. Would highly recommend a visit to him.

Aftercare

  • Brush carefully around the bridge and implants twice daily
  • Use a water flosser or interdental brushes to clean beneath the bridge
  • Attend regular hygiene appointments at Galway Dentists — these are especially important for fixed full-arch restorations
  • Avoid smoking, which increases the risk of implant failure
  • Follow dietary guidance during the healing period — a softer diet is recommended initially

All-on-4 Dental Implants FAQ

All-on-4 is a full-arch tooth replacement solution that uses four implants to support a fixed bridge replacing a complete upper or lower set of teeth. The implants are placed at specific angles to maximise bone contact and stability.

Individual implant treatment places one implant per missing tooth, or several implants for a smaller bridge. All-on-4 uses just four implants to replace an entire arch, making it a more efficient solution for patients with extensive tooth loss.

In many cases, a temporary fixed bridge can be placed on the day of surgery or shortly afterwards. This means you leave the clinic with a full set of teeth. The permanent bridge is fitted after the implants have fully integrated with the bone.

Most patients with significant tooth loss are suitable for All-on-4, but a thorough assessment is required. Bone quality, overall health, and oral hygiene habits are all considered. Galway Dentists will confirm suitability during your consultation.

Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during surgery. Some swelling, bruising, and discomfort in the days following the procedure is normal and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief.

Initial implant placement and temporary teeth can often be completed in a single visit. Full healing and fitting of the permanent bridge typically takes several months. Your clinician at Galway Dentists will provide a clear timeline.

After the healing phase is complete, patients can eat a wide range of foods comfortably. A soft diet is recommended during the initial healing period to protect the implants. Once the permanent bridge is in place, chewing function is significantly improved compared to a conventional denture.

Brushing twice daily with a soft brush and using a water flosser or specialist interdental tools to clean beneath the bridge is essential. Maintaining hygiene around the implants is particularly important for a full-arch fixed restoration. Galway Dentists will provide detailed guidance and ongoing hygiene support.

The implants can last for many years or decades with proper care. The bridge itself may require maintenance or replacement over time as a result of normal wear. Attending regular check-ups at Galway Dentists is the best way to protect the longevity of the restoration.

All-on-4 treatment costs vary depending on your individual clinical needs and the materials used. Galway Dentists will provide a detailed written treatment plan with transparent pricing following your consultation, ensuring you can make an informed decision.
