What is an Implant Retained Denture?

An implant retained denture is a removable denture that clips onto dental implants placed in the jawbone. Unlike a traditional denture, which relies on suction or adhesive and can move during eating or speaking, an implant retained denture is held firmly in place by the implants underneath.
The denture can still be removed for cleaning, but it stays secure throughout the day. At Galway Dentists, we design each solution to maximise comfort, stability, and natural appearance.

Who is an Implant Retained Denture Suitable For?

This treatment is well suited to patients who:

  • Have lost most or all of their teeth in one or both arches
  •  Wear an existing denture that moves, slips, or causes discomfort
  •  Have difficulty eating or speaking with a traditional denture
  •  Have experienced bone loss in the jaw over time
  •  Want a more reliable solution without committing to fully fixed teeth

Over time, bone loss under a conventional denture can make it increasingly difficult to achieve a stable fit. Dental implants help preserve the underlying bone and provide a firm anchor for the denture, improving both function and comfort long-term.

What to expect

Treatment Procedure

We assess your oral health, existing denture (if you have one), and bone levels using scans. This allows us to plan the number and position of implants required and discuss the best approach for your situation.

A small number of implants — typically two to four per arch — are placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic.

The implants are left to integrate with the bone over several weeks to months. This healing period is essential before the denture can be attached.

A custom denture is made and fitted with attachments that click onto the implants, providing a secure and comfortable fit.

We check the fit and function of the denture and make any adjustments needed for your comfort.
Treatment timelines vary depending on healing and whether your existing denture can be adapted or a new one is needed.

  • I was very impressed with the quality of work done on a front tooth filling that had fallen out along with half of one of my front teeth. Dr.O'Hagan refilled it and did cosmetic work on it so quickly and painlessly that I couldn't believe she was finished. Top notch work and fairly priced!

Aftercare

Remove and clean your denture thoroughly each day

  • Brush carefully around the implants and gum tissue
  •  Attend regular maintenance visits at Galway Dentists
  • Keep the attachment areas clean to prevent gum inflammation
  •  Avoid smoking where possible, as it increases the risk of implant complications

The denture attachments may need occasional servicing or replacement over time, which is a routine part of maintenance.

Implant Retained Denture FAQ

It is a removable denture anchored to dental implants in the jawbone. The implants provide stability that a conventional denture cannot achieve on its own.

A traditional denture rests on the gums and can move or slip. An implant retained denture clips onto implants, giving a far more secure fit — without needing adhesive.

Typically two to four implants per arch. Two implants are often sufficient in the lower jaw; the upper jaw may need more due to differences in bone density. Galway Dentists will advise based on your scans.

Yes. Implant retained dentures are designed to be removed for daily cleaning. They clip securely in place during the day and are easily removed at night.

Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic. Some mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising may occur in the days following surgery, but this is manageable with standard pain relief. Most patients find the process easier than they expected.

Treatment typically takes several months from the initial consultation to fitting the final denture, as time is needed for the implants to integrate with the bone. A temporary denture can usually be worn throughout this period.

Implant retained dentures significantly improve chewing compared to a conventional denture. Because they are stabilised by implants patients can enjoy a much wider range of foods with confidence.

The implants themselves can last for many years or decades with good care. The denture and its attachments will need periodic maintenance or replacement over time. Regular check-ups at Galway Dentists help keep everything in good condition and functioning properly.
