What is a Single Dental Implant?
A single dental implant is a fixed solution for replacing one missing tooth. A small titanium post is placed into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant has bonded to the bone through a process called osseointegration, a custom-made crown is then secured on top, restoring the look, feel, and function of your natural tooth.
Because the implant sits within the bone itself, it provides a stable and durable foundation — without affecting the teeth either side of the gap.Restore Your Smile with Our Dental Implants
Dental implants, the perfect solution to replacing missing or critically damaged teeth, have entirely transformed the dentistry landscape over the last decade.
With their titanium post, which is surgically embedded in the jaw, dental implants function as an artificial replacement for the root of your tooth. They can be fitted with a crown or fixed with further cosmetic restoration to transform your smile.
Dental implants can also support loose dentures, securing them firmly in place. However, dental implants are only appropriate under certain circumstances. The benefit of having dental implants fitted is simple: you can achieve cosmetic and functional results with an appearance comparable to natural teeth. Dental implants are a well-established, tried and tested treatment. 90% of modern implants last for at least 15 years.
Once the implant is fitted, patients can expect an appropriate healing period, known as osseointegration, before enjoying that pristine smile and functional use for years to come. Treatment is generally undertaken under local or general anaesthetic, with patients able to return home once the dental implant has been fitted.
What Causes a Single Missing Tooth?
A single dental implant can replace a tooth lost due to:
- Tooth decay or infection
- Trauma or injury
- Gum disease (periodontitis)
- Failed root canal treatment
- A tooth that never developed (congenitally missing tooth)
Leaving a gap untreated can lead to bone loss at the site, movement of surrounding teeth, and changes to your bite over time. Replacing the tooth early helps preserve the structure of your jaw and neighbouring teeth preventing other issues that develop over time.
How is a Single Dental Implant Placed?
We carry out a full assessment of your oral health, take digital scans, and check that you have sufficient bone for implant placement. If any preparatory treatment is needed, we discuss this with you before proceeding.
The titanium implant is placed into the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Most patients find the procedure more comfortable than they expected.
Over the following few months, the implant fuses with the surrounding bone. This integration period is essential for long-term stability.
A custom-made porcelain crown is attached to the implant, restoring full function and a natural appearance.
We check healing and confirm everything is functioning as expected.
Most patients complete treatment within 4–6 months, depending on individual healing.

Aftercare
Caring for a dental implant is straightforward and very similar to caring for a natural tooth:
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Clean between teeth daily using floss or interdental brushes
- Attend regular check-ups and hygiene visits at Galway Dentists
- Avoid smoking — smoking significantly increases the risk of implant failure
With proper care, dental implants can last for many years and in many cases, decades.

I've been going here since the start of September 2016, and I have to say it is one of the best dentists around. Very professional and friendly, as well as a relaxing atmosphere to the place, they have never let me down. The staff are delightful and Michael is an incredible dentist. Would recommend to anyone.

I have been visiting Dr. Eilis O’Hagan for many years, but I never took the time to post a review until now. I have had similar fantastic experiences during my visits to this dental practice over the years. Dr. Eilis is extremely professional, excellent at her job, really makes you feel very comfortable and has a lovely manner when carrying out her work, you would not think you were are at the dentist. I would highly recommend her to family and friends.

I was very impressed with the quality of work done on a front tooth filling that had fallen out along with half of one of my front teeth. Dr.O'Hagan refilled it and did cosmetic work on it so quickly and painlessly that I couldn't believe she was finished. Top notch work and fairly priced!

I visited Michael Donnelly here at this practice. I found he put me right at ease, as I was worried about going to the Dentist. I had not attended a Dentist in over a year. He went through the procedure very thoroughly and any questions I had throughout his explanation, he was happy to answer. Would highly recommend a visit to him.

Single Dental Implant FAQ
A single dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. A crown is then attached on top to restore the tooth’s appearance and function.
With good oral hygiene and regular dental visits, a dental implant can last many years — often decades. The crown may require replacement over time due to normal wear.
Implant placement is carried out under local anaesthetic. Most patients report only mild discomfort in the days following the procedure, which is manageable with standard pain relief
From the first consultation to fitting the crown, treatment typically takes between 3 to 6 months. The healing phase accounts for most of this time.
Most adults in good general health are suitable candidates. But you need sufficient jawbone to support the implant and healthy gums. Galway Dentists will assess your suitability at your consultation.
An implant does not require any alteration to the teeth adjacent to the gap. It also preserves bone at the site of the missing tooth, which a bridge does not. This makes it both a more conservative and biologically favourable option in the long-term.
A gap in your teeth can lead to bone loss at that site, shifting of surrounding teeth, and changes to your bite. These issues
The cost depends on your individual treatment needs. Galway Dentists will provide a detailed, written treatment plan with clear pricing after your consultation, so you know exactly what is involved before committing.
