What Are a Dentures?

Looking for a way to rejuvenate your smile and boost your confidence? Look no further than Galway Dentists! Our team of friendly and skilled dental professionals are dedicated to providing you with dentures that are not only a perfect fit but also look fantastic. We’re passionate about helping you regain the full functionality of your teeth with top-quality dentures designed just for you.

Dentures, often called “false teeth,” are custom-crafted appliances that replace missing teeth due to extraction or loss. They are designed to be removable for your convenience and, with proper care, can last up to a decade. At Galway Dentists, we suggest having your dentures relined every one to two years or if you notice any changes in the fit. Relining involves adding new material to the denture’s base to ensure a snug and comfortable fit against your gums. Each set of dentures we create is tailor-made in our on-site lab, using precise impressions of your mouth to ensure they meet your individual needs. We’d like to guide you in choosing the perfect type of dentures to light up your smile again.

Who are Dentures suited to?

Did you know that a study by Wrigley and Glaxo-SmithKline found that most Europeans feel good about their dental health, with seven out of ten expressing satisfaction? However, this same study highlighted a surprising fact: 84% of people in Ireland don’t brush their teeth as frequently as their European counterparts.

This leads us to a significant concern. In Ireland, a staggering 42% of the population experiences missing teeth, known in dental terms as “edentulism.”

But there’s good news: Galway Dentists has a solution! Dentures are a fantastic option for those who have lost teeth due to various reasons, including dental neglect, inadequate nutrition, accidents, or even deliberate tooth extractions.

They’re an excellent choice for individuals who may not be candidates for surgery or those looking for a more budget-friendly alternative to dental implants or bridges. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re curious about how a custom-made denture can restore your smile. Feel free to call us at 091582222 to schedule your consultation today.
The Process

Dentures - Treatment Process

Galway Dentists

Getting dentures is one of the most convenient and practical solutions to missing teeth. And at Galway Dentists, here’s how we do it.

The first and most crucial step is to create a representation or replica of your upper (maxilla) and lower (mandible) jawbones. We do this to determine the bones’ relationship, including the between-bone space. It’s imprecise, but enough to get us to the second step.
The jaw outline allows us to create a custom dental impression tray for your jawbone’s ridges. We use a safe material to register your bite, allowing us to determine the precise position of the missing teeth, including their size.
Our prosthodontists or denturists will take the wax rim as a reference for fabricating (casting) the false teeth using high-quality, strong, and durable acrylic polymers. They cure and polish the denture, ready for fitting at the clinic.
Your second trip to the dental clinic is one of the happiest in your calendar. Our dentists fit the denture in your mouth, ensuring the correct placement. We’ll also teach you how to care for the false teeth, including what to expect.

What Can You Expect Post-procedure?

Although dentures are the safest treatment option for missing teeth, they do need some getting used to, especially in the first few days after denture fitting.

It’s not uncommon to experience some discomfort or soreness after getting new dentures fitted, as your mouth adjusts to the new appliance. However, this typically diminishes over time as the fit improves and your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures.

Adjusting to new dentures may temporarily affect your speech, causing slight lisps or difficulty pronouncing certain words. With practice and time, your tongue and muscles will adapt, making your speech clear and natural once again.

Initially, eating with new dentures may feel awkward, and you might find it challenging to manage certain foods. Gradually, as you become accustomed to your dentures, you’ll be able to return to a more normal and varied diet.

After getting new dentures fitted, you may experience excessive salivation as your mouth adjusts to the presence of the dental appliance. This reaction is normal and should decrease as you become more accustomed to wearing your dentures.

  • I visited Michael Donnelly here at this practice. I found he put me right at ease, as I was worried about going to the Dentist. I had not attended a Dentist in over a year. He went through the procedure very thoroughly and any questions I had throughout his explanation, he was happy to answer. Would highly recommend a visit to him.

Types of Dentures

01. What Types of Dentures exist
Dentures, commonly known as false teeth, are tailored to suit your needs, whether you’re missing all or just some of your teeth.

Complete Dentures
If you’re missing all of your teeth, complete dentures are the full-mouth solution that will bring back your brilliant smile, elevate your self-esteem, and improve your ability to chew and enjoy a variety of foods.

Partial Dentures
For those who still have some of their natural teeth, partial dentures are the ideal choice. Designed with a gum-coloured plastic base, these dentures blend seamlessly with your existing teeth and are securely held in place by a durable stainless steel framework.

Both types are crafted to look natural and comfortable, giving you a reason to smile confidently again.
02. Benefits from getting Dentures
Dentures are remarkable dental prosthetics that offer numerous advantages to their wearers.

Enhances Self-Esteem
Sporting a complete set of gleaming teeth radiates friendliness and approachability and bolsters your overall sense of well-being and self-perception. With dentures, you’ll revel in the confidence to smile broadly, creating picture-perfect moments and fostering more positive social engagements.

Liberates Dietary Choices
Savour the flavours of traditional Irish stew and other culinary delights without hesitation, as dentures restore your ability to chew a wide range of foods. Say goodbye to the days of avoiding hard or sticky fare and welcome back the full spectrum of beloved Irish cuisine and treats.

Preserves Facial Structure
Tooth loss can lead to the unfortunate side effect of sagging facial muscles, diminishing your face’s natural support structure. Dentures help prevent this by providing the necessary support to maintain your facial contours, potentially taking years off your appearance and preserving your youthful visage.
